Face Serums … Likes and Dislikes
“Sleep, drink water, and treat your skin.” – Georgia Louise
Serums are a great addition to your skincare routine because they’re highly concentrated with the ingredients you need for your skin. While they are typically pricier than your average moisturizer, they should last you months if used properly. I typically will use 2-3 drops and rub the excess into my jaw/neck.
Your skin absorbs more from a serum than a lotion because the molecules are typically smaller. Also, moisturizers typically form a barrier to lock in moisture, which in turn doesn’t allow for the molecules to get absorbed. For this reason, always put your serum on before a moisturizer!
Here’s how I do my nighttime skincare routine:
- Wash face – Cetaphil
- Serum
- Moisturizer – love neutrogena!
- Eye cream – It Cosmetics
-
- I like this one because it has a cooling sensation and it’s super lightweight!
I have oily skin – so my skin needs hydration. If you have dry skin – a serum in oil should work for you.
Below you’ll find my thoughts on some of the serums that I have tried!
1. Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate
People say that they see drastic results with this serum. I, however, am not one of those people. Not only did I not see drastic results, I believe it either caused me to break out a lot OR it just didn’t help with my breakouts.
Aside from efficacy, I also hated the smell. It has primrose oil and another scent. I’d rather my skincare not have a scent or have a fresh scent. Needless to say, I threw this one out.
2. Murad Retinol Youth Renewal Serum
Honestly, I bought this because it has retinol in it and retinol is one of the only products that have been shown effective to remove dark marks. I have a lot of scarring due to acne so I decided to give this a try.
**With any retinol product, care should be taken to avoid sunlight**
I think this slightly helped but it didn’t completely remove my dark marks. I also think it helped a little with controlling my acne. I only used this at night. Keep in mind I have stubborn acne marks.
3. iS Clinical Hydra-Cool Serum
My facialist recommended this one to me because this is the brand that they use in their salon. I like that this serum has no scent, doesn’t make me break out, and immediately sinks into the skin without leaving a greasy feel.
I feel like it truly gives my skin the hydration that it needs and makes it feel super moisturized. Yes, oily skin can get dry too. The key to keeping oils at bay is making sure that your skin is properly hydrated.
This serum does not make me break out and is supposed to be anti-acneic. I don’t notice a reduction in dark marks but it doesn’t claim to do so. So far this one is my favorite!
What are your favorite skin care products? My skin is CRAZY so I would love to try some new things! Looking forward to hearing from you guys!

I love Noxema. The cold cream, I’m so old school.
I tried a product like three weeks ago and it said brightens skin and removes dark Mark’s. It had vitamin C in it, noone told me it would stain my skin.
Maybe I’ll do a review on that.
I would like to try that last serum you reviewed, I have oily skin as well.
Thank you.
