Beauty and Misinformation
Hello Sparklers!
Today I wanted to write a post on something I am passionate about – beauty, duh! Not just beauty though, beauty AND health.
What sparked my need to write this post was actually a snapchat I saw. In the snaps, an extremely popular beauty blogger was seen talking about how Rogaine makes your hair grow. While yes, it is true that Rogaine has been proven to make hair grow – you can also lose all of it when it you stop taking the product. You literally have to use this product every day for the rest of your life for it to work. I think that it is dangerous and careless to talk about this product (which by the way is more of a health product than a beauty product) without warning consumers about the side effects. There are a lot of impressionable ladies that watch her snaps and I think beauty bloggers (myself included) need to be more responsible about the information that is put out there.
I understand that it is our job to recommend products that we think are great. However, when recommending a HEALTH/WELLNESS/MEDICAL product, then I think disclaimers to the audience should be provided. A statement such as “I love this product but you should still do your research before deciding to use it for yourself” would suffice.
It’s not just this particular beauty blogger spreading information like this. One of my favorite youtubers recently started going down a path looking for “clean” “all natural” makeup. While I think it’s great that she is looking into using better products, I think that she is very misinformed on the ingredients that are used in those products and the purpose for which they are used.
If she wants to use “clean” makeup that is fine – but when she spreads misinformation on such a huge platform, that’s where I have an issue. For example, she is on a hunt for all natural makeup because she thinks that it is better. People think all natural always means better but it doesn’t. Cyanide is natural but that doesn’t mean it is good for you. Just like MANY all natural soaps are not good for you because they are too alkaline and end up drying your skin out. Syndets such as Dove soap are actually better for you. Products are formulated in such a way that they can include the ingredients that are needed to preserve the shelf life and the products that your skin actually needs. My point is, don’t go blindly into using all natural products without doing your research. All natural doesn’t mean better.
We as humans are CHEMICAL beings. We are made up of a bagillion chemicals! Every. living. thing. is. made. up. of. chemicals. I don’t understand the idea that all chemicals are bad for you.
And while we are on the topic I’m going to open up another can of worms. People who say “OMG” this chemical X is used in window cleaners and it’s also in my beauty product – I’m not gonna use that. Did you actually research the ingredient and what it is used for? Just because it’s used in a household product doesn’t mean that it’s automatically bad. Is the chemical used a stabilizer, a preservative..? What amounts are used in the product? Typically, a certain amount of chemicals will not be toxic to humans. That’s why you don’t die if you get Clorox on your hand but if you spray it on a spider the spider will die.
That being said, don’t just go out and buy ANY makeup. Makeup isn’t under strict regulation from the FDA so always becareful of what you are buying. My point of this whole long post is – DO YOUR RESEARCH – ALWAYS! Especially if someone is promoting a HEALTH product- always always always do your research!
I know that this post may be controversial and a trigger for many people. You are welcome to share your opinions on the topic in a constructive way in the comments section – let’s have an open conversation! xo

When I was working as a makeup artist, I’d be so frustrated because clients would tell me about all these beauty tips and products without real knowledge. The worst is people who assume that foundation causes acne.
I do think there are loads of bad chemicals in products and things like SLS I don’t agree with. But as you said, all natural doesn’t mean it’s the best and not every chemical is bad. Some fruit even contains preservatives. So I agree and think people need to do more research before they label everything black and white. I’m glad you’ve shared this. x
Yes!! OMG I can imagine how annoying that was! Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts girl! xo
